The
Beyond Gender Project
There are almost one and a half million transgender people in the United States, but you might be feeling alone. You -- and your parents and friends -- probably have a lot of questions. If so, you are in the right place! Welcome.
We hope this website helps you find answers and support, as well as a better understanding of the concerns facing transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary teens and young adults. You'll find resources that help explain the complicated idea of gender, links to safe transgender communities, information on social and medical transitioning, information about advocacy and current issues, and more.
This project was born out of the need to support individuals in their quest to live authentic lives. Everyone should be able to thrive and share their unique gifts with the world. In 2016, more attention, both positive and negative, has been given to transgender and gender diverse people than ever before. The need for support has never been greater. We need to be aware of the frequent misconceptions around gender and gender identity within our society. This site exists to help direct you and your family to accurate information, support, and encouragement. It's for anyone questioning gender expectations. |
The information on this site, and the resources we link to, have been carefully chosen because they are useful and accurate, and have been shown to promote health and well being in transgender children and youth. We are a team of public health and nursing professionals, scientists, and people with deep connections to the transgender community.
You are not alone. You are loved. We are all in this together. If you are in need of immediate support, contact the TREVOR Lifeline at 866-488-7386. Recently, more attention--both positive and negative—has been given to transgender and gender diverse people than ever before. The need for support has never been greater. |
PARENTSIf your child or teenager has told you they are transgender, or is expressing themselves differently than you expected, you probably have some questions. The information on the Getting Support page can help you learn how to support your child as they explore their identity or begin to transition. Gender Identity 101 will help you understand more about gender identity and gender expansiveness. The Transitioning tab offers information about both social and medical gender transitioning. Finally, visit our FAQ page to find quick answers to frequently asked questions.
